Accessibility Isn't Sexy, But It's a Must-Have
“Accessibility is not sexy... but it is a must-have. It’s part of your business foundation.” That’s the truth. And yet, I see so many business owners still treat accessibility like an afterthought or worse, like an overwhelming, all-or-nothing project they don’t have time for.
Here’s the deal: You do not need to burn it all down. I know you’ve already worked hard to refine your systems—your offers, your site, your emails, your podcast—and I’m not here to undo any of that. I’m here to help you build on it.
I always tell folks who want an easy way to get started is by starting small. “Pick one area that you wanna focus on and do well,” whether that’s your website, your email list, your podcast, or even just your contact form. As Colie put it during our convo: “You don’t have to attack your entire client experience at one time... I just need you to write a to-do task list.”
So, what does it actually look like to build on what you've already got?
First, we get clear on what "accessible" even means in the context of your business. That might look like:
Making sure your website has appropriate color contrast and readable font sizes.
Adding alt text to your images. Actual alt text, not just keyword-stuffed nonsense.
Using proper headings (yep, H1s and H2s matter!) so your content is easy to navigate for screen readers.
Including transcripts with your videos or podcasts and making them easy to find!
Ensuring your emails aren’t just graphics in disguise because screen readers can’t read images.
Next, we map your priorities. I help you look at what you already have and identify quick wins versus bigger projects. This isn’t about perfection. It’s about progress. If you’ve got a podcast, we start with transcripts. If your social posts are image-heavy, we tackle alt text. If your onboarding emails are a hot mess of image-only designs, we rework one.
And lastly? I make sure it fits into your existing systems. Because accessibility shouldn't be a detour, it should be a seamless part of how your business runs. You're not starting over. You're upgrading what you've already built.
You can go watch or listen/read to my episode on Colie James's podcast: Business-First Creatives. We talk about accessibility in a way that actually makes sense (and doesn’t make you want to run away screaming).
